Steensma Honored for Contributions to WashU Student Community

Faculty; Students

In a display of student appreciation, Joe Steensma, a professor of practice at the Brown School, has been honored with the Outstanding Faculty Member award at the university’s annual First Year Finale gala.

Steensma’s recognition, driven by nominations from first-year students, celebrates his contributions to the university community as a Faculty Fellow in the William Greenleaf & Eliot (WGE) Residential Community. In this role, Steensma lives alongside undergraduate students for three years, serving as a mentor and role model, and fostering a bridge between academic and residential life.

The award is part of an annual tradition where first-year students nominate faculty members who have made a notable impact on their initial year at WashU. Steensma’s recognition underscores his commitment to creating a supportive and engaging student environment.

Reflecting on the honor, Steensma remarked, “I think it’s kind of cool, considering that I am a professor in a ‘graduate school.’ It validates that we can impact students’ lives outside the classroom and that they not only value those interactions, but long for them.”

One nominator praised Steensma for creating a supportive and vibrant atmosphere in the Danforth Campus, highlighting his habit of giving students candy while they study, keeping his door open for conversations, and treating everyone with respect and kindness.

Another student noted, “He hosts game nights for students to connect and even brings us to grocery stores to get groceries. He also hosts office hours so students can talk to him about personal questions, academic ideas, or anything. More than any other faculty member I know, Joe goes above and beyond to show how much he cares for his students. I am always happy to see his smiling face around Danforth!”
