Brown School Response to SCOTUS Decisions on Race-Conscious Admissions Practices

Community Engagement; Policy; Public Health; Social Work; Students

The following communication was sent to Brown School students, faculty and staff on June 29, 2023.

Dear Brown School Community,

We are deeply disheartened by the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which declared the consideration of race in university admissions unconstitutional. The shortsighted decision fails to recognize the systemic, structural racism that remains pervasive in all aspects of society. It ignores the social determinants that disproportionately diminish opportunities for people of color. Furthermore, it runs counter to the Brown School’s mission to create a better and more equitable society.

While the Supreme Court’s decision is a striking blow, we assure you that it only strengthens our resolve. It is our unending goal to develop the next generation of change makers who understand, value, and advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.  We are committed to leveraging everything within our power to ensure equitable access to a Brown School education. Furthermore, we will continue to work diligently to expand the diversity of our student body.

We are aware that moments like this amplify the historic trauma that people of color have endured when faced with discrimination and racial injustice. It is hurtful and can negatively impact a feeling of belonging.  Please know that we deeply value our students of color.  You are not just wanted here – you are needed.  Your unique perspectives, experiences, and contributions are integral to making the Brown School one of the best schools in the country. We stand with you, today and always.

Washington University in St. Louis has a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. More information can be found at equity.wustl.edu.
