Campus-Based Positions

As part of Washington University in St. Louis, Brown School master’s-level students have access to a variety of campus-based fellowships, research assistantships and other part-time jobs.

Across campus, Brown School students are sought after for fellowships in Residential Life, Student Involvement, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, the Gephardt Institute for Civic & Community Engagement, and so on.

In addition, some Brown School faculty will hire student research assistants in the spring (others will wait until the late-summer and early-fall to offer these positions). Those research assistantships will be posted here as they come available, as well as other part-time positions within the Brown School.

Graduate Program Assistantship – Organizational Capacity-building Beginning Sept. 2024

Position Description
The Center for Human Service Leadership and its staff provide organizational capacity building services (management and leadership training, consulting, information, referral) to the nonprofit tenants of the Delmar DivINe nonprofit co-location site, their employees and others. The Graduate Program Assistant will assist in the design, planning and implementation of programs and services offered. The Delmar DivINe is a large-scale, innovative project, opened in 2022, which provides office, shared meeting, and technical supports to approximately 30 nonprofit organizations. With an explicit goal of promoting transformative services, innovation and collaboration, Delmar DivINe has repurposed a large hospital complex located on the symbolic dividing line that separates poor and affluent St. Louis.

Skills and Qualifications
Preference given to incoming students enrolled in the 60 credit, MSW Social Impact Leadership Concentration, MSW Management Specialization or MSW/MBA joint degree, and those with some prior human service work experience.

  • Interest in organizational capacity building or consulting
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal & communication skills
  • Initiative and ability to work independently
  • Willingness to work year round, occasional nights and weekends
  • Ability to arrange transportation to Delmar DivINe, located approximately three miles northeast of campus. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, planning & implementation of formal and informal leadership and management training programs and events
  • Compile and maintain database of nonprofit leadership and management resources
  • Monitor and disseminate information on environmental trends, developments, opportunities that may affect nonprofit tenants
  • Research answers to tenant organizational capacity questions
  • Assist in the writing of issue papers and other publications

Compensation & Benefits
This position pays $15.25/hr, and the assistant will work an average of 10 hours/week. This is a 12 month a year position. Total compensation is capped and estimated at $5,000 per year.

Center for Aging Research Assistant Job Description 

Position Description 
The Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging at the Institute for Public Health is offering a research assistant position to an incoming graduate student. Applicants do not need to have prior experience in aging or research, but must have an interest in exploring issues relevant for older adults and aging societies and a desire to learn about and conduct research. Faculty Sponsorship & Supervision 
The Center for Aging Research Assistant will receive faculty mentorship from Co-Directors of the Center for Aging, Nancy Morrow-Howell, MSW, PhD, Betty Bofinger Brown Distinguished Professor of Social Policy at the Brown School and Brian Carpenter, PhD, Professor of Psychological & Brain Sciences. Direct supervision of the research assistant will be provided by Natalie Galucia, LMSW, Manager, Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging. 

Skills and Qualifications 
Interested applicants should have strong verbal, written and organizational skills as well as an interest in aging. Previous experience with research, communications, event development, and programs for older adults is preferred, but not required. The selected applicant should be able to work at least 10 hours per week and preferably commit to working two academic years. 

Primary Responsibilities 
• Assist with center-supported pilot studies and other initiatives, including literature reviews, data collection, report writing, etc. (40%) 

• Coordinate planning and implementation of center seminars, annual lecture, and other events. (40%) 

• Assist with center communications by developing newsletter and social media content. (10%) 

• Carry out other special projects as needed. (10%) 

Compensation & Benefits 
The position will be compensated at a rate of $15.25/hr for the first year paid on a bi-weekly basis. Upon review of satisfactory work, compensation will be increase to $16/hr if the position continues for a second year. The position requires a minimum of 10 hours per week, but may provide up to 15 hours per week. A remission subsidy of $500 will be provided to offset the mandatory Student Health and Wellness Fee.
