Proficiency Exams

The Brown School offers proficiency examinations for select foundation courses in the MSW, MPH and MSP programs.

Proficiency exams do not offer course credit toward your degree; however, passing an exam will exempt you from taking the associated Foundation course, therefore allowing the credits to be satisfied with an approved elective course. Proficiency exams will be available to take online, at a time of your choosing, from June 7 to August 2, 2021. (NOTE: If you do take exams after fall registration and end up testing out of a Foundation course for which you registered, you will be able to alter your course schedule accordingly with the help of your Academic Advisor.)

Proficiency Exam Policies

  • Students must confirm their intent to enroll and submit their non-refundable $200 advance-tuition deposit to be eligible to take proficiency exams.
  • Students are encouraged to take any available proficiency exam in which they have background knowledge or prior coursework. (Advanced Standing students can take exams for any course for which they have not already been granted credit.) If passed, the associated course will be waived and the student will replace those credits with an elective later in the program. Students should speak with their Academic Advisor about altering their fall schedule accordingly.
  • Each proficiency exam may be taken only once.
  • Students are notified of their exam results within approximately five days. If you are notified that you passed an exam after you have already enrolled in that particular Foundation course, you will be automatically dropped from the course. You can then speak to your Academic Advisor about registering for a replacement course.
  • Study guides are not provided for proficiency exams. Students are encouraged to review the course overviews for an understanding of what each exam will cover.
  • Read more about exam policies and instructions
