Adolescence is – by definition - a time of experimentation and of a person separating their decision-making from that of their parents. As clients transition from childhood to adolescence to adulthood, a therapist’s ethical responsibilities also evolve.
In this workshop, social workers will apply the NASW Code of Ethics to common ethical dilemmas faced in practice with children and adolescents. We will discuss a youth’s right to confidentiality, working effectively with challenging caregivers, and maintaining a confidential case file. Participants will be presented with a range of ethical dilemmas and engage in critical thinking about how best to respond. We will role-play challenging conversations based on the scenarios.
Note: This workshop is not a mandated reporter training. Issues concerning safety and abuse will be addressed, but will not be the primary area of focus for this class.
This class meets the licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in ethics.
