Social service professionals see clients with varying degrees of mental capacity. Some may already have had someone appointed by the court to make decisions on their behalf; others may have designated someone to assist with decisions should they become unable to do so independently. Finally, while managing a client’s care, you may come to believe that, in the absence of someone to make crucial medical decisions on behalf of the client, they will become a danger to self or others.

This workshop will explore the available legal options of Guardianship and Power of Attorney. We will explore the ethical tension inherent when a client can no longer make their own decisions. Other ethical issues that may arise in treating a client who is no longer competent or may be a danger to himself or others will also be discussed.

This class meets the licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in ethics.

General Admission: $60**

Class size is limited to 45.

**Discounts on workshop admission are offered to the Brown School’s students, alumni, and field instructors. We also offer a discount to full-time graduate students in other programs and to our Washington University faculty/staff colleagues. No other discounts are available.
