Introduction to Donor Solicitation: Tools & Practice

Solicitation skills are important to an organization’s success.  If you are new to resource development or have never been formally trained, this class will provide a strategic framework to consider how to create your value proposition and tailor your approach.

In five days, you will learn basic skills in developing and implementing a strategic fundraising program, including setting goals, choosing fundraising techniques, interfacing with staff and volunteers, data management, and evaluating results. Using a case statement as a foundation and creating a solicitation plan with supporting materials, participants will grow their confidence “making the ask” by understanding basic principles of human nature.

Workshop will consist of daily live Zoom webinars from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m., and additional course material in Canvas.

Class size is limited to 25.

$650 General admission
$450 Non-profit/government employees (1st Summer Institute class)
$400 Non-profit/government employees (Additional Summer Institute classes)

This class will include both degree-seeking graduate students and practicing professionals. Individuals registering through Professional Development will receive continuing education units - but not academic credit - for the class.

About the Instructor:

Allie Chang Ray is a nonprofit consultant in the areas of advocacy, leadership, governance, management, sustainability, and collaboration.  During her career, she has been responsible for raising or disbursing more than $50 million.  Using her experiences as a nonprofit executive director, development director, foundation program officer, business owner, board member, and donor, Allie’s insight stems from a wide range of perspectives.  She has been an adjunct instructor at the Brown School since 2016, teaching Fundraising Design & Management and Marketing, Resource Development & Community Relations.  Allie holds a master’s degree in Human Services Administration from University of Missouri - Columbia.
