Youth Suicide Prevention: Counseling, Intervention Strategies and Safety Planning with Adolescents

Suicide among American youth continues to increase and is now the second leading cause of death in adolescents, exceeded only by accidents.  Safety planning, means restriction, increased family and school support, and counseling intervention have been shown effective in preventing adolescent suicide.

This workshop will explore current best practices in safety planning, counseling strategies, and intervention approaches with suicidal youth.  We will discuss outpatient, community-based methods for increasing hopefulness, providing alternatives for pain relief, and building social-emotional coping skills with the goals of increasing safety and avoiding inpatient hospitalization whenever possible.  Participants will be encouraged to share effective intervention strategies that they use in their own practice settings.

This class meets the Missouri requirement for at least 2 CEUs in suicide continuing education each licensure period.
