This class will provide an introductory experience with Tableau, currently one of the best software programs for optimally visualizing and explaining data. Class meetings are heavily practice-oriented, with hands-on activities working with data, designing visualizations, and creating interactive dashboards.
The primary focus of the course is to develop core proficiencies in Tableau and to develop the confidence to continue your practice towards great mastery. During class meetings, we will also discuss data visualization theory and design, how to identify metrics, and ethical considerations related to data visualization. The class will also review but not use additional software packages to provide context and options for future use. Like all technology-based skills, Tableau skills atrophy quickly and will develop best when used. Participants will have the opportunity to work on a personal project to be submitted following the close of our class meetings.
The course will consist of live Zoom webinars from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. (Central Time) starting Monday, June 19th for the first 4 days for instruction and skill-building. On the final day (6/23), students will work individually on their own projects, with the instructor available for virtual office hours throughout class time.

This class will include both degree-seeking graduate students and practicing professionals. Individuals registering through Professional Development will receive continuing education units – but not academic credit – for the class.

About the Instructor:
Ted Floros has a passion for using data and technology for good. Currently, he works for Justine PETERSEN, a local nonprofit CDFI loan fund, as the Evaluation Associate with a focus on automating and simplifying technical processes and enhancing both data quality and data use. Ted is a member of the adjunct faculty at the Brown School, teaching Data Visualization. He holds a Master of Public Health Degree from the Brown School.
