Teaching Professor, Brown School

This course will focus on the basic skill sets important to the effective management of people and teams. The framework of class includes working toward and implementing a trauma-informed management style and moving organizations toward trauma-informed practice. The skills highlighted include building a strong organizational culture, selecting job applicants, motivating and supporting people, measuring work performance, and leading teams. Participants will use course readings to understand the theoretical context for organizational behavior and management. Students will analyze and apply theory to practice using case studies representative of situations encountered by social service managers.

The class will consist of daily live Zoom webinars from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. (Central Time), and additional course material in Canvas.

Class size is limited to 25.

$650 General admission
$450 Non-profit/government employees (1st Summer Institute class)
$400 Non-profit/government employees (Additional Summer Institute classes)

This class will include both degree-seeking graduate students and practicing professionals. Individuals registering through Professional Development will receive continuing education units – but not academic credit – for the class.

About the Instructor:

Janelle Barker Gibson

Janelle Barker Gibson’s career reflects 20 years of work in human services and healthcare. At the Brown School, she serves as the lead instructor for “Social Work Practice with Organizations and Communities,” and she teaches additional courses including “Social, Economic and Political Environments.” Prior to becoming a senior lecturer, Gibson was an adjunct professor at the Brown School since 2009. She has been recognized twice for excellence in teaching. Gibson has also lectured at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, on behalf of the Brown School, on the topic of nonprofit management and social entrepreneurism.
